Otter lands in California.

Sailing from Boston and captained by Ebenezer Dorr Jr., it is the first U.S. ship to land in California and anchors off today’s Monterey, California. The Betsy, captained by Charles Winship, becomes the first U.S. vessel to reach the California coast in 1799.
